Early career was in Treasury Banking and this led to my interest in financial investment, especially the stockmarket. Enjoy reading widely on business, investment, economics, financial markets and key figures such as Jesse Livermore or Warren Buffet. Later on I moved into Information Technology [IT] and have been there ever since in various roles.

Main Career and Experience

Spent many years in IT at a large Life Sciences company, progressing from IT support, through software development [previously was a member of ACCU and wrote a number of articles and book reviews] and project management to senior management. Gained many skills and experience like:

  • Project Management - as a business systems delivery manager, I was primarily trained in APEX [Advancing Project Management Expertise], a derivative of PMI [Project Management Institute], which is similar to PRINCE2. I was also trained in other approaches and specialised topics such as quality management and testing. Managed many different projects using many different approaches, technologies, team sizes, budgets and complexity. Budgets ranged from a 10,000 to 2,000,000 with staff resource ranging from in-house staff, to contract staff to using offshore providers and team sizes from 2 to 35 people
  • Service Management - as service owner of a shared electronic document management service [DMS]. I was trained in and used ITIL [IT Infrastructure Library], Six Sigma and PS3 [People, Strategy, Solution and Services]. DMS was global in nature with ~120 servers in 9 locations, 35,000 users and 6 Terabytes of documentation
  • Department Head - trained in a number of management areas and leadership skills, and involved with budget responsibilities, line management and organisational design
